King to Share Intimate Address on Cancer in TV Address

King Charles has taped a intimate address about his experience with cancer, set to air as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer initiative, run by medical research organisations and a major network.

Buckingham Palace stated the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a recorded address on Friday at 20:00 GMT.

The message, taped inside Clarence House a fortnight ago, will highlight the importance of preventative health checks to increase the likelihood more people catch the condition at an initial point.

This constitutes a uncommon insight on the wellbeing of the Monarch, who has been receiving ongoing care since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. Analysts suggest doubtful the King will specify his specific form of cancer.

Fundraising Central Purpose

The awareness campaign each year generates donations for clinical trials and treatment and encourages people to get check-ups to improve the probability of an prompt identification.

The King's relative openness about his health challenge, and managing the disease, has been designed to promote education and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be advanced with this unusual direct participation.

Up until now the King's primary strategy to his cancer has been to keep working, upholding a full diary despite his ongoing course of care, and he is understood not to have sought to be characterised by his illness.

The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several international tours, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and hosting the largest volume of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, featuring the German president recently.

Friday's Special Show

This Friday's awareness broadcast on Channel 4, presented by presenters such as Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will appeal to people not to be frightened of getting preventative tests.

The hosts have been personally touched by cancer - Davina McCall disclosed recently she had undergone surgery for a tumour, while Clare Balding was diagnosed with a thyroid condition over a decade ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously discussed his father, who had one form of cancer and then later leukaemia.

The broadcast will reach out to the approximate 9m people in the UK who Cancer Research UK estimate are not current with public health checks, with an online checker to let people see if they are able for tests for several common cancers.

In an attempt to explain screenings and illustrate the importance of early diagnosis there will be a live broadcast from cancer clinics at medical facilities in Cambridge.

"My aim is to remove the anxiety out of health checks and prove all people that they are not on their own in this," said one of the hosts.

Available Screening Programmes

Currently in the UK, there are three NHS cancer screening programmes - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - accessible for certain age groups.

A new lung cancer screening programme is also being phased in for anyone at increased risk of being diagnosed with the disease, primarily aimed at people aged 55-74 years old, who currently smoke or used to.

Men may enquire about prostate screenings, but there is no national programme operational.

Charitable Impact

The fundraising project, which has collected a significant sum since 2012, is financing dozens of medical projects with 13,000 patients.

King Charles, in a address for guests at a reception for cancer charities in April, had spoken of recognising the "intimidating and at times frightening situation" for those diagnosed and their loved ones.

But he noted his first-hand encounter of coping with cancer had revealed that "the darkest moments of sickness can be illuminated by the support of carers," as he praised those who supported those receiving treatment.

The Palace has not made public what kind of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has received. The King's cancer was detected subsequent to he had undergone a prostate procedure.
