New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
