New York Launches Portal for Citizens to Report Immigration Videos Following Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form urging locals to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, triggering large-scale protests.
American Citizens Arrested During Raid
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," state officials stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity recently, I ask you to provide that material with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
Form Details
The portal includes fields to submit photos and videos of the incident, along with a field to note location information. Prior to sending, users must tick a option that acknowledges that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved more than 50 government officers, occurred in a popular district of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are commonly traded widely – typically to tourists.
Recordings of the operation show multiple covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a individual, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt violence that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, as did NY's governor.
"Once again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It has to end," a political candidate wrote.
NYC community groups voiced concern as well.
"ICE raided Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and riot gear to go after small merchants attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," stated the head of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the detention of US citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from arrest or detain American nationals. However, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in the state and across the US lately.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies opposing ICE are widespread along with allegations of force and abusive practices.
Most recently, a submission provided by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of pregnant women in government custody.
