Two Separate Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Unaccounted For following Departing Mexico.
A extensive search and rescue operation is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine crew members, per a official statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with proper safety systems and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission commented.
The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"We are co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political pressure have been ramped up lately, with statements from different leaders emphasizing the delicate nature of relations.
In response to certain statements, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
